Annex XI: GPAI Technical Documentation
Annex XI sets the minimum content for the technical documentation GPAI providers must draw up and keep under Article 53(1)(a): information on the model's development process, training and testing process and results, and, where relevant, information about the energy consumption of training. It is a separate schema from Annex IV, which applies to high-risk systems rather than to general-purpose models.
- 02 Aug 2025 In force since — applies to models placed on the market from this date
- 02 Aug 2027 Legacy models already on the market before 2 August 2025 must reach full documentation compliance
- Document the model's general description, development process, and architecture.
- Document the training process, including methodologies, data sources at a general level, and computational resources used.
- Document testing and evaluation results, including known limitations.
- Where relevant, document information on the model's energy consumption during training.
- Keep the documentation available to the AI Office and national authorities on request, and current as the model is updated.
- Annex XI technical documentation file, held for AI Office/national authority requests
Annex XI documentation for GPAI models is sometimes confused with Annex IV documentation for high-risk systems; they cover different things at different levels — the model itself versus a specific system built on top of it — and satisfying one does not satisfy the other.
