Article 56: GPAI Codes of Practice
Article 56 provides for Codes of Practice, developed with GPAI providers, civil society, and other stakeholders under the AI Office's coordination, as a recognised way for providers to demonstrate compliance with Articles 53 and 55 until harmonised standards are published. Signing is voluntary; the finalised GPAI Code of Practice covers transparency, copyright, and safety and security.

- If signed, participate in the associated governance structure, such as the Signatory Taskforce, and follow the Code's transparency, copyright, and safety-and-security chapters.
- Understand that Code of Practice adherence does not create the same automatic presumption of conformity as a harmonised standard, but is treated by the AI Office as good-faith evidence of compliance effort.
- Track whether harmonised standards later supersede parts of the Code as the recognised compliance route.

Signing the Code of Practice is sometimes assumed to be legally required for GPAI compliance; it is voluntary — the underlying Article 53 and 55 obligations apply regardless of signatory status, with the Code serving as one recognised (but not exclusive) way to demonstrate compliance.
Unsettled: Whether Code of Practice signatories in practice receive more lenient fine calculation is described only as a secondary-source assessment (not a confirmed legal norm) in the underlying research; treat as administrative practice, not binding law, unless independently confirmed.
